Elliot Page, star of Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” takes on a new and deeply personal role in “Close to You,” a film set in the small town of Cobourg.

The Halifax-born actor plays Sam, a trans man returning to his family home for the first time since his transition. This marks Page’s first big-screen lead role since coming out as trans in 2020.

Directed by award-winning British filmmaker Dominic Savage, “Close to You” was shot on location in Cobourg, capturing the town’s wintry charm and close-knit community feel. The film is known for its raw, real-world style, featuring improvised dialogue and long, uninterrupted takes that immerse viewers in Sam’s emotional journey.

Page and Savage developed the plot together, focusing on the nuanced experience of acceptance within a loving but imperfect family. “Close to You” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year and has just been released in theatres.

With its authentic storytelling and stunning Cobourg backdrop, “Close to You” is more than just a film – it’s a reflection of the complexities of identity, family, and belonging.
